Channahon is located in southwest Will County and Eastern Grundy County. The area known as Channahon was named by the native Potawatomie Indians. Because the DesPlaines, Kankakee and DuPage rivers meet together in this area to become the Illinois River, the name Channahon, meaning “meeting of waters”, was given to this region.
The Village of Channahon was incorporated in December, 1961. In addition to the businesses and industries that make up the community, Channahon is home to a county forest preserve and a state park. Both the local park system and the trails that run along the historic I & M Canal National Heritage Corridor provide residents with a variety of recreational opportunities. The Three Rivers Public Library District provides Channahon and Minooka residents with a variety of resources and services, including but not limited to books, reference materials, computers for public use, and special programs for children.
Channahon is located just forty-five miles southwest of Chicago, and is bordered by the communities of Minooka, Shorewood, Joliet and Morris. Channahon sits just west of I-55 and south of I-80.
