District News:

Hope you enjoy learning about our school and District 17. We are filled with a caring staff from kitchen to teachers to bus drivers to support staff.

It is every child’s right to learn to his/her full potential and the staff of Galloway School is dedicated to fulfilling this right. We believe that children learn in a situation where love and understanding are coupled with mutual respect – students for adults, adults for students. Freedom must be present within the confines of a structure that allows protection for the rights of all individuals. Children need to know what they can and cannot do and that they will be treated fairly, equally, and consistently. Complete freedom only promotes chaos and does not present a true picture of our world. Our ultimate objective in education is effective citizenship.

How exciting to be starting another year! The entire staff at N.B. Galloway School is looking forward to working with you, as partners, in your child's education. It has been a busy summer and the custodial staff has been hard at work to make sure our building is ready for students. You will notice that we have a new and improved entrance to Galloway School. These changes will ensure that all visitors pass through the office prior to entering the school. We are pleased with how this renovation turned out and feel confident that we have increased the safety of our students and staff.

We have a new staff member to welcome to our team. Ms. Kelsey Nichols will be teaching kindergarten this year. Kelsey is a former student of Channahon Schools and we are thrilled to have her on board.

You will be seeing a new math and reading curriculum used in our K-2 classrooms this year. Last year the board approved the adoption of Origo Math, which is a new series that has been aligned to the Common Core State Standards. The increased rigor will assist students in meeting the high standards set before us. It may look a bit different than what you and I were used to in elementary school as it has a heavy emphasis on critical thinking with a strong technology piece. Please contact your child's teacher with any questions you may have about this new curriculum. We are also taking part in a reading pilot. I am very excited about this. We have the opportunity to implement two rigorous and highly credited programs and will use student data from this year to determine which series will give our children the best instruction in future years. The two series are Harcourt Journeys and McGraw Hill Wonders. I am already hearing wonderful things from teachers about both series. Again, please communicate with your child's teacher should you have questions about the reading program your child is using.

As always, good communication is an important aspect of education. Students and parents should feel free to come to the office with questions, problems, and/or concerns. Be sure to look for our "Galloway Gazette" newsletter as well as newsletters from your child's teacher and other communications. You can also check the district website www.CSD17.org, for district information.

In order for all of us to live and work peacefully, we need to set some guidelines to follow. You will receive the district handbook as well as the N.B. Galloway supplement from your child's teacher. Please be sure to become familiar with the rules and procedures included in those handbooks. The safety and well being of our children is very important and we appreciate your support!

We are all looking forward to another great year and encourage you to be involved in your child's education as we all work together to "Build World Class Thinkers."
